In this case, they'd made contact with an almost warp capable society who wanted some advice. T'Pol had already advised against helping them the rest of the way but the Cap'n had felt that it couldn't hurt to just look around.
In fact, T'Pol had originally come down with the Archer and Trip, leaving Malcolm in charge up on Enterprise. But something had gone wrong in one of her departments so Travis had come down in one of the shuttle pods to get her, leaving Trip and the Captain in what seemed like friendly hands.
